Spellmaking & Custom Spells
How to unlock the Spellmaking Altar, how the system works, and the combinations that make a mage genuinely overpowered.

How to Unlock Spellmaking
The Spellmaking Altar is located in the Chironasium, a dedicated workshop inside the Arcane University in the Imperial City. You cannot access the Arcane University without completing the Mages Guild recommendation quests — one in each of the six guild halls across Cyrodiil.
Once you have all six recommendations and report back to Raminus Polus at the Arcane University, you're granted full access to the grounds. The Chironasium is one of the first buildings inside the gate on your left. The Spellmaking Altar is impossible to miss — it's the glowing magical apparatus in the center of the room.
How the Spellmaking System Works
At the altar, you select one or more spell effects from a list of effects you already know (i.e., spells you've purchased or found). For each effect, you set four parameters:
| Parameter | What it does | Cost impact |
|---|---|---|
| Magnitude | The power of the effect — damage dealt, points restored, duration of paralysis, etc. | Increases cost significantly; doubling magnitude roughly doubles cost |
| Duration | How long the effect lasts in seconds. Instant effects (like Damage Health) use Duration 1. | Moderate cost increase; longer duration is more cost-efficient than higher magnitude for persistent effects |
| Area | Radius of effect in feet around the target point. 0 = single target. | High cost increase; AoE spells are expensive |
| Target | Self (affects you), Touch (affects target you're touching), or Target (projectile) | Self is cheapest; Target projectile costs the most for the same magnitude |
You can stack multiple effects in one spell — up to the combined Magicka cost you can pay. The spell costs whatever total the altar calculates. If you don't have enough Magicka to cast it, the game won't stop you from making it — but it will fail when you try to cast it in the field. Build around your current Magicka pool and scale up as Intelligence and Willpower grow.
The Best Custom Spell Combinations
1. Weakness + Damage (One-Shot Burst)
Combine Weakness to Fire 100% for 2 sec on Touch with Fire Damage 50 pts for 1 sec on Touch in a single spell. The Weakness effect applies first, then the Damage effect hits a target that is now 100% more vulnerable to fire — effectively dealing 100 points of fire damage for the cost of a 50-point spell.
This stacks across all damage types. Weakness to Frost + Frost Damage, Weakness to Shock + Shock Damage, Weakness to Magic + any spell damage. The principle scales infinitely: stack two Weakness effects (Weakness to Magic + Weakness to Fire) before a Fire Damage hit and the multipliers compound dramatically.
2. Drain Attribute to 0 (Instant Disable)
Drain Health 100 pts for 1 sec on Touch is one of the cheapest lethal spells in the game. Drain differs from Damage in a crucial way: it reduces current Health without permanently damaging the stat, and lasts only for the spell's duration. But if the drain reduces an enemy to 0 Health — even temporarily — they die.
A well-built character can make a 100pt Drain Health Touch spell for surprisingly low Magicka cost. For non-elite enemies below 100 Health, this is a one-tap kill at close range. Scaling the magnitude to 200 or 300 handles harder targets. Requires Destruction to be purchased at a vendor first.
3. Fortify Skill Spells (Temporary Power Buffs)
Fortify Alchemy 100 pts for 30 sec on Self lets you brew potions at a much higher effective skill level than your actual Alchemy. The potions you create during that 30-second window retain their boosted values even after the spell ends. This is how you make potions worth 5,000+ gold early in the game.
Fortify Mercantile works the same way — cast before opening a vendor's barter screen to get dramatically better prices. Fortify Armorer lets you repair equipment above 100% condition temporarily. Any Fortify Skill effect can be spellmade at very low cost for a 1–2 second burst; that's usually enough for one crafting action.
4. Paralysis on Touch (Combat Lockdown)
Paralyze 10 sec on Touch completely disables any target without a paralysis immunity. Ten seconds is enough time to land a full weapon combo, switch targets, drink a potion, or reposition. The spell requires Alteration at a reasonable level, but it's available for purchase from trainers and vendors once you hit Alteration 50.
For high-value targets (boss enemies, named characters), stack Paralyze with Silence on Touch to simultaneously immobilize them and remove their spellcasting ability. Two effects in one spell, cast once, neutralizes almost any threat.
5. ★ The 100% Chameleon Build (Game-Ending Combination)
This is the most famous build in Oblivion for good reason. At 100% Chameleon, enemies cannot detect you, NPCs in combat will not attack you, guards will not pursue you, and you can freely pickpocket, steal, or attack with zero consequences. It does not require spellmaking — it requires enchanting, which is also unlocked at the Arcane University.
The path: enchant five pieces of clothing or jewelry (rings, amulets, hood, robe, gloves) each with Chameleon 20%. Five items × 20% = 100% Chameleon. Each enchantment requires a filled Grand Soul Gem (a Grand-tier soul — captured from a powerful creature using Soul Trap and a Grand Soul Gem).
| Slot | Item to enchant | Required soul |
|---|---|---|
| Head | Any hood or hat | Grand Soul Gem (filled) |
| Chest | Any robe or light chest piece | Grand Soul Gem (filled) |
| Hands | Any gloves or bracers | Grand Soul Gem (filled) |
| Ring 1 | Any ring | Grand Soul Gem (filled) |
| Ring 2 / Amulet | Any ring or amulet | Grand Soul Gem (filled) |
The Fortify Intelligence Magicka Loop
Oblivion's systems interact in a way that allows you to generate arbitrarily large Magicka pools. It works like this:
- Create a custom spell: Fortify Intelligence 100 pts for 2 sec on Self.
- While the spell is active, your effective Intelligence is temporarily boosted.
- Use Alchemy with boosted Intelligence to brew Fortify Intelligence potions. These are permanent until consumed.
- Drink a Fortify Intelligence potion. Your Intelligence is now higher than before.
- Use that higher Intelligence to brew even stronger Fortify Intelligence potions.
- Repeat. Each cycle compounds — the potions get stronger, which raises Intelligence further, which makes stronger potions.
- Once Intelligence is high enough, brew Fortify Magicka potions at maximum effectiveness. Your Magicka pool becomes effectively unlimited for any fight.
Reducing Spell Cost
Custom spells cost less Magicka to cast when your skill in the relevant school is higher. A Destruction spell at Destruction 25 costs far more than the same spell at Destruction 75. This means custom spells become more affordable as you level — spells that are out of reach at character creation are often castable by level 10–15.
| Cost reduction method | How to apply |
|---|---|
| Raise the relevant magic school skill | Cast cheaper store-bought spells of that school repeatedly in safe areas |
| Use Self target instead of Touch or Target | Self-targeted spells are cheapest; use for buffs and healing |
| Reduce Duration on damage spells to 1 sec | Instant effects at Duration 1 are more cost-efficient than slow burns for burst damage |
| Fortify Magic School (custom spell) | Fortify Destruction 100 for 2 sec on Self before casting — your effective skill jumps temporarily, reducing cost |
| Atronach birthsign absorption | Absorbing enemy spells refunds Magicka — plan aggressive positioning to trigger it |
