Guide for Oblivion Remastered (2025) · Updated April 2026
Why Join the Mages Guild
Guild membership gives you access to free beds in all six guild halls, guild-exclusive spell vendors, and the ability to purchase spells and training from higher-ranking members as your own rank climbs. None of that is the primary reason to join.
The real reason is the Arcane University. Completing all six recommendation quests grants you access to the university's inner grounds, which contain:
- The Spellmaking Altar (Chironasium) — create custom spells from any effects you know
- The Enchanting Altar (Praxographical Center) — enchant any clothing, jewelry, or weapon
- Master-level spell trainers for Destruction, Conjuration, and other schools
- A full alchemical lab with all apparatus tiers
Joining the Guild
Walk into any Mages Guild hall and speak with the guild hall leader (the person with a "Join the Mages Guild" dialogue option). There are no skill prerequisites and no gold cost. You're immediately enrolled at the rank of Associate.
After joining, speak with the hall leader again and ask about "Recommendation" — they'll tell you to speak with the local leader who actually issues the quest. In most halls this is the same person. Complete all six and return to Raminus Polus at the Arcane University in the Imperial City to receive your access token.
The Six Recommendation Quests
Anvil — A Mage's Staff
Quest giver: Carahil · Location: Anvil Mages Guild, then the Gold Road
Carahil is investigating a series of murders targeting traveling mages on the Gold Road north of Anvil. She asks you to pose as a traveling mage as bait, with her agents watching nearby. Head to the Inn of Ill Omen on the Gold Road, rent a room, and sleep — the murderer will attempt to drain your Magicka and kill you while you rest.
The attacker is revealed to be Caminalda, a mage staying at the inn. When confronted or when she attacks, kill or subdue her. Return to Carahil with the news to receive your recommendation.
Bravil — Alchemy Mishap
Quest giver: Kud-Ei · Location: Bravil Mages Guild, then Blighted Mine
Kud-Ei wants you to retrieve a recommendation scroll from Ardaline, a guild member who won't part with it willingly. Speak with Ardaline — she's extremely attached to the scroll but will agree to let it go if you help find her missing colleague Erthor, who wandered into Blighted Mine east of Bravil and hasn't returned.
Blighted Mine has been overrun with Blighted creatures (infected zombies). Fight through to find Erthor alive in the back of the mine. Escort him back to Bravil. Ardaline releases the scroll, Kud-Ei writes the recommendation.
Bruma — Ulterior Motives
Quest giver: Jeanne Frasoric · Location: Bruma Mages Guild
Guild member J'skar has gone missing — except he hasn't. Another member, Volanaro, cast a spell on J'skar that turned him permanently invisible as a prank. J'skar won't reveal himself until the spell is removed, and Volanaro won't help willingly.
Persuade or bribe Volanaro into telling you where the scroll is — or simply pick the lock on his chest (Volanaro sleeps at night; his room has a chest containing the scroll). Retrieve the scroll and cast the dispel on J'skar, who is standing in the main hall but invisible. He'll reappear and Jeanne writes the recommendation.
Cheydinhal — Fingers of the Mountain (Part 1)
Quest giver: Falcar · Location: Cheydinhal Mages Guild, then the well
Falcar, the Cheydinhal hall leader, refuses to write a recommendation directly. Instead he sends you on an errand: retrieve a Ring of Burden he dropped down the well behind the guild hall. He withholds the information that the ring carries a massive Feather penalty — the previous person he sent, Vidkun, drowned because the ring's weight dragged him to the bottom.
Dive into the well. Vidkun's corpse is at the bottom with the Ring of Burden on it. Retrieve the ring and immediately remove it from your inventory (it's equippable). Surface and speak to Deetsan — she's witnessed Falcar's behavior before and will write the recommendation herself without requiring you to confront Falcar.
Chorrol — A Chance Arrangement
Quest giver: Teekeeus · Location: Chorrol Mages Guild and city
Teekeeus asks you to steal a special ring from a Khajiit named S'razirr and plant it on guild member Laythe Wavrick to frame him. This quest intersects with the Thieves Guild — speaking with the Thieves Guild contact in Chorrol can simplify the theft.
S'razirr carries the ring on his person and moves around Chorrol during the day. Pickpocket him (Security or a Chameleon spell helps) or find an alternate approach by speaking with the Thieves Guild fence. Once you have the ring, plant it in Laythe Wavrick's room at the guild hall. Return to Teekeeus for your recommendation.
Leyawiin — Siren's Deception
Quest giver: Dagail · Location: Leyawiin Mages Guild, then Fort Blueblood
Dagail, the Leyawiin hall leader, is struggling to maintain coherence — she has a condition that causes visions and breaks her concentration. Her anchor is a family amulet passed down from her ancestor, but it has gone missing. Without it she can't function well enough to write the recommendation.
Speak with Kalthar in the guild hall — he deflects suspicion but is the source of the problem. Through conversation or investigation, learn that the amulet is in Fort Blueblood south of Leyawiin, held by a group of hostile mages. Fight through the fort, retrieve the Amulet of Dagail, and return it to her. She writes the recommendation; Kalthar's scheme is exposed as a side effect.
Reaching the Arcane University
With all six recommendations, travel to the Arcane University on the eastern side of the Imperial City. Enter through the main gate and find Raminus Polus in the Arch-Mage's Lobby — he's usually near the entrance. Speak with him about your recommendations and he promotes you to the rank of Apprentice and grants you a passcard for the inner grounds.
| Location | What's there |
|---|---|
| Chironasium | Spellmaking Altar — create custom spells from any effects you've purchased |
| Praxographical Center | Enchanting Altar — enchant gear with filled Soul Gems; path to 100% Chameleon |
| Lustratorium | Alchemy lab with all apparatus (Calcinator, Alembic, Retort, Mortar) |
| Mystic Archives | Skill books for all magic schools; free reading = free skill points |
| Arch-Mage's Tower | High-level trainers; Arch-Mage's quarters (accessible after guild questline) |
The Mages Guild Main Questline
After gaining Arcane University access, speak with Raminus Polus again to begin the guild's main storyline. The questline concerns the Order of the Black Worm — a necromancer faction led by the lich Mannimarco, the King of Worms — and their plans to infiltrate and undermine the Mages Guild from within.
| # | Quest | Key objective |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fingers of the Mountain | Translate an ancient text; leads to a powerful lightning spell reward |
| 2 | A Plot Revealed | Necromancers are exposed operating near the university; investigate |
| 3 | The Necromancer's Moon | Disrupt a dark ritual at the Shade of the Revenant |
| 4 | Vahtacen's Secret | Translate Ayleid runes in a ruin using specific spell school knowledge — brings a scholar along |
| 5 | Liberation or Apprehension? | Track a renegade guild member who may be defecting to the necromancers |
| 6 | Information at a Price | Gather intelligence on Mannimarco's location and plans |
| 7 | A Mage's Staff (Arch-Mage arc) | Retrieve the Arch-Mage's staff from the necromancers |
| 8 | Ambush at the University | Defend the university from a direct necromancer attack |
| 9 | Confront the King | Face Mannimarco; recover the Bloodworm Helm and the Necromancer's Amulet |
Guild Ranks & Training Access
Guild rank determines which members will train you and sell you spells. Higher-level trainers — the ones with Master-level spells for sale — require you to be at least Warlock rank before they'll work with you. Rank advances by completing questline stages and by meeting skill requirements in magic disciplines.
| Rank | How to reach it | Notable unlock |
|---|---|---|
| Associate | Join the guild | Free beds; basic vendor access |
| Apprentice | Complete all 6 recommendations | Arcane University access; Spellmaking and Enchanting Altars |
| Journeyman | Complete early guild questline stages | Wider trainer access |
| Evoker → Conjurer → Magician → Warlock | Complete questline + skill thresholds in magic | Master-level trainer and spell vendor access at Warlock |
| Wizard → Master-Wizard | Advanced questline | Arch-Mage's Tower access |
| Arch-Mage | Complete the full guild questline | Arch-Mage's quarters; unique robe and staff |
With Arcane University access secured, the next step is putting the Spellmaking Altar to work. The Spellmaking guide covers the best custom spell combinations — including the 100% Chameleon enchanting build and the Fortify Intelligence Magicka loop. If you're still deciding what kind of mage to build before committing to the guild questline, the Builds guide has four complete archetypes with efficient leveling paths.
