How the Questline Starts

Roughly 24 in-game hours after you start playing, a courier delivers a note about a strange man preaching in Anvil. Head to the garden next to Benirus Manor, across from the Anvil Chapel, and speak to the Prophet. He asks you to undertake a Pilgrimage — visit one wayshrine of each of the Nine Divines anywhere on the map to wash away your Infamy.

This isn't a combat quest or a "cleanse a corrupted shrine" mechanic — just activate one wayshrine per Divine (Akatosh, Talos, Julianos, Mara, Kynareth, Stendarr, Zenithar, Arkay, Dibella). Completing all nine triggers a vision from Pelinal Whitestrake, pointing you toward his lost, submerged shrine at Vanua, an Ayleid ruin. There, you retrieve the Helm of the Crusader and find the corpse of a Knight of the Nine, Sir Amiel, along with his journal and ring.

The Priory of the Nine

Sir Amiel's journal directs you to the Priory of the Nine in the West Weald. His ring opens a secret basement beneath it, where you must defeat 8 ghostly Knights in sequential one-on-one duels — a test of worth — to earn the right to the Cuirass of the Crusader.

The Priory's knights each hand out a relic quest. Once you've proven yourself, the resident Knights of the Nine each send you after a different piece of the Crusader's Relics. You don't have to do them in a fixed order — pick whichever quest giver you haven't spoken to yet.

The 9 Crusader's Relics

Eight are wearable armor/weapon pieces; the ninth — the Blessing of Talos — is a Lesser Power, not gear, and it's the key that triggers the final fight.

The Gauntlets quest applies a real curse. Stendarr's Mercy's "Curse of the Consumed" drains your Fatigue constantly once you retrieve the Gauntlets. It isn't a bug — it's cured later by the Blessing of Talos, so push through rather than assuming something's broken.

Umaril the Unfeathered — The Final Battle

The fight happens at Garlas Malatar, an Ayleid ruin, and comes in two distinct phases:

  • Phase 1 — Physical: A Dark Orb in the main chamber continuously resurrects Umaril's Auroran troops until you destroy it, which freezes time and clears the room. You then fight Umaril himself in oversized Auroran form in a shallow-pool chamber. Loot Umaril's Sword after this fight.
  • Transition: Cast the Blessing of Talos — obtainable only after collecting all other relics — and you're teleported to the sky above the Imperial City.
  • Phase 2 — Spiritual: Fight Umaril's spirit form in this aerial arena. Defeating him here destroys him permanently, and you fall back to the Priory basement with a second chance to grab Umaril's Sword.

Ending & Rewards

You're promoted through the ranks (Knight Errant → Knight Commander → Divine Crusader), Sir Thedret delivers a closing speech, and you can recruit a Knight of the Nine as a follower afterward. Rewards include Umaril's Sword, activatable +5 attribute Blessings at the fallen Knights' tombs back at the Priory, and a Fame boost.
