What Is Oblivion Remastered?

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is Bethesda's 2025 re-release of the 2006 RPG classic, rebuilt with Unreal Engine 5 visuals on top of the original game's engine and systems. It was shadow-dropped on April 22, 2025, across PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series — with a Nintendo Switch 2 version confirmed for 2026.

You play as a prisoner who escapes through the sewers of the Imperial City just as Emperor Uriel Septim VII is assassinated. His last act is to give you an amulet and charge you with finding his illegitimate heir, Martin, before the forces of Oblivion — demonic planes that feed on chaos — tear Cyrodiil apart. The main quest is relatively short. The world surrounding it is enormous: guilds, Daedric quests, side questlines, and explorable wilderness fill hundreds of hours.

The core systems are identical to the original game. If you played Oblivion in 2006, everything you remember is here. If this is your first time, this guide covers what the game doesn't explain clearly — including the leveling system, which can silently ruin a playthrough if you don't understand how it works.

Core Systems at a Glance

SystemHow it worksWhat to know
Leveling Every 10 increases in your major skills triggers a level up. On level up, you choose which 3 attributes to raise, with a multiplier based on how many associated skills you improved that level. Enemy scaling is tied to your level. Leveling inefficiently (missing x5 attribute multipliers) makes the game harder over time. See the Builds guide for efficient class design.
Birthsigns Chosen at character creation, each birthsign grants a permanent bonus or power. Cannot be changed later. The Atronach (spell absorption, +150 Magicka, no regen) is the highest ceiling for mages but hardest to play. The Mage (+50 Magicka, no drawbacks) is the safe choice.
Spellmaking Combine any purchased spell effects — magnitude, duration, area, target — into a single custom spell. Unlocked at the Arcane University after completing the Mages Guild recommendation quests. The most powerful system in the game. 100% Chameleon, instant-kill drain spells, and Fortify Skill loops all come from here. See the Spellmaking guide.
Enchanting Apply persistent magical effects to weapons, armor, and rings using filled Soul Gems. Available at the Arcane University enchanting altar and several vendors. The path to 100% Chameleon runs through enchanting. Grand Soul Gems (Grand souls) give the highest charge for the most powerful effects.
Factions & Guilds Four joinable guilds — Fighters, Mages, Thieves, and Dark Brotherhood — each with a full questline and unique rewards. Guild rank gates training access with master-level trainers. The Mages Guild is the essential questline for any spellcaster. All six city recommendations are required before you can access the Arcane University. See the Mages Guild guide.
One thing the game won't warn you about: If you make combat skills (Blade, Block, Heavy Armor) your major skills and then level them up constantly, you'll level up fast — which scales enemies up fast — without improving your combat attributes efficiently. Design your major skills deliberately, not from default class templates.

New to Oblivion? Here's Where to Start.

Read the Builds guide before you create your character. The default class templates in Oblivion are poorly designed for efficient progression — understanding how major skills and leveling interact before you start will prevent the most common frustration (enemies scaling faster than you do).

If you're already in the game and playing a spellcaster, the Mages Guild walkthrough is your immediate priority — completing the six city recommendations unlocks spellmaking at the Arcane University, which is the most powerful system in the game.

Once you have Arcane University access, the Spellmaking guide covers the combinations that make a mage genuinely overpowered — including the 100% Chameleon build that lets you walk through any encounter undetected. If you want to match a name to your mage, the Wizard Name Generator can help, or craft a spell title with the Spell Name Generator.
