The Astrologer's Path — Intelligence Sorcerer Build
The complete Intelligence mage build for Elden Ring — class selection, stat priorities, staff progression, essential sorceries, and Spirit Ash choices from Limgrave through Shadow of the Erdtree.
Patch 1.16 · Covers base game + Shadow of the Erdtree DLC · June 2026
Why Play a Mage?
The Intelligence sorcerer is one of the most powerful builds in Elden Ring — and one of the most thematically rich. You are playing a scholar of the Academy of Raya Lucaria, wielding star-fire that predates the Golden Order, gravity magic drawn from Radahn's own power, and full-moon sorceries that belong to Rennala herself. The game's best lore is in the sorcery descriptions.
Mechanically, sorcery scales extremely well. Rock Sling works on almost every boss in the game — including those with magic resistance — because it deals physical damage. Comet Azur deletes health bars. Terra Magica amplifies all sorcery by 35%. At 60 Intelligence, you are doing competitive damage without the need to learn as tight a dodge timing as melee builds require.
The trade-off: you are fragile. Low Vigor, no poise, no shield. You will die instantly to anything that closes to melee range. The entire play pattern is about managing distance, using Spirit Ashes as a meatshield, and punishing boss animations from maximum range. WizardsTower is here to help you master exactly that.
Starting Class: Astrologer
Always start as Astrologer for a pure INT sorcerer build. It begins with INT 16 — the highest starting Intelligence of any class — and comes equipped with a Glintstone Staff, a Glintstone Pebble spell, and Glintstone Arc. You are casting from minute one.
| Astrologer Starting Stats | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Level | 6 | Lowest starting level of INT-focused classes |
| Vigor | 9 | Your first priority to raise — this is dangerously low |
| Mind | 15 | Good starting FP pool for early sorcery use |
| Endurance | 9 | Raise slightly for equip load/stamina |
| Strength | 8 | Leave alone unless you want a staff/int weapon |
| Dexterity | 12 | Leave alone; slight cast speed bonus per point |
| Intelligence | 16 | Your primary damage stat — raise first after Vigor |
| Faith | 7 | Leave alone unless building a hybrid |
| Arcane | 9 | Leave alone for pure sorcery |
Stat Priority and Leveling Order
Follow this order strictly. Deviating by front-loading INT and neglecting Vigor is the most common mistake — you will die constantly in the mid-game even at high INT.
Phase 1 — Limgrave and Liurnia (levels 6–50)
- Vigor to 25 immediately — you start at 9, which is one-shot territory in most areas
- Intelligence to 40 — first soft cap, substantial damage increase
- Mind to 30 — enough FP to sustain fights without constant flask use
- Vigor to 40 — mandatory before Stormveil; you cannot survive the castle at lower Vigor
Phase 2 — Altus Plateau and Leyndell (levels 50–80)
- Intelligence to 60 — the main damage soft cap; this is where sorcery truly opens up
- Mind to 40 — sustain for long fights and multiple Spirit Ash summons
- Vigor to 50 — Leyndell and beyond will punish 40 Vigor
Phase 3 — Endgame and Shadow of the Erdtree (levels 80–150+)
- Vigor to 60 — required for DLC; Shadow of the Erdtree is tuned around 60 Vigor minimum
- Intelligence to 80 — pushes you past the final soft cap for maximum staff scaling
- Dexterity to 25–30 — each DEX point slightly reduces cast animation time; meaningful at 25+
- Remaining points into Mind or Endurance to preference
Staff Progression — The Three Phases
Your staff is your primary weapon. Staff AR determines your sorcery damage directly. These are the three staffs that define the mage's power curve — one for early game, one for mid-game, one for endgame.
Phase 1 Staff: Demi-Human Queen's Staff (INT 10 required)
Found by defeating a Demi-Human Queen (optional miniboss) at Demi-Human Forest Ruins in southwest Limgrave. This staff has excellent INT scaling at low-to-mid INT levels (10–50) and outperforms both the Astrologer's starting staff and the Academy Glintstone Staff for most of early-to-mid game. Upgrade it to +5 or +6.
Phase 2 Staff: Meteorite Staff (INT 18 required)
Found in Caelid — in a building in the Street of Sages Ruins, inside a corpse hanging out a window. The critical aspect: this staff cannot be upgraded, but it grants a passive +30% bonus to Gravity sorceries (Rock Sling, Gravity Well, etc.). Combined with Rock Sling, this is your best damage tool from levels ~30–70. Always carry this specifically for Rock Sling.
Phase 3 Staff: Carian Regal Scepter (INT 60 required)
Crafted from Rennala's Remembrance (defeat Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon, then trade her Remembrance to Enia at the Roundtable Hold). This is the best all-around endgame staff — highest AR at 60–80 INT, plus a 10% bonus to Full Moon sorceries. Upgrade it to +10 with Somber Smithing Stones. This is your primary staff for the remainder of the game.
Essential Sorceries by Phase
| Sorcery | Phase | Why it matters | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glintstone Pebble | Early | Your starter — low FP cost, fast cast, reliable damage. Use until Rock Sling | Starts with Astrologer class |
| Rock Sling | Early-Mid | Gravity sorcery that deals physical damage — works on magic-resistant enemies. Three chunks of rock, each dealing poise damage. Stagger tool. | Chest in Street of Sages Ruins, Caelid (same area as Meteorite Staff) |
| Terra Magica | Mid | Creates a zone that boosts all magic damage by 35% for 30 seconds. Cast at start of every major fight — especially invaluable for Comet Azur. | Academy Crystal Cave, Liurnia (chest behind illusory wall) |
| Glintblade Phalanx | Mid | Summons tracking blades that auto-fire. Good for enemies that close the gap; casts instantly while you dodge. | Purchase from Miriel (Turtle Priest) at Church of Vows, Liurnia |
| Comet Azur | Mid-Late | The nuke — fires a sustained beam that deals massive damage in under 5 seconds against stationary targets (or targets locked down by Spirit Ashes). Combine with Terra Magica and Cerulean Hidden Tear (Flask Crystal Tear) for a free, no-FP-cost channel. | Hermit Village, Altus Plateau (Primeval Sorcerer Azur NPC) |
| Stars of Ruin | Late | Fires 12 homing stars. Each one tracks independently. Almost impossible to dodge for fast-moving enemies. | Sellen questline reward (requires completing most of her quest) |
| Ranni's Dark Moon | Late/DLC | Fires a cold full moon — builds frostbite on hit and reduces enemy magic resistance by 10% for 60 seconds. Extremely strong opener in the DLC. | Chelona's Rise, Moonlight Altar area (end of Ranni's questline) |

Spirit Ashes — Your Best Friends
Spirit Ashes are not optional for a sorcerer — they are the core mechanic that makes the build function. You deal damage from range; the Spirit Ash draws aggro from the front. Pick one that matches your current phase and upgrade it at the Roundtable Hold's Roderika (Spirit Tuning merchant).
| Spirit Ash | Phase | Why use it |
|---|---|---|
| Lone Wolf Ashes | Early (free) | Given by Renna early in the game. Three wolves who split boss aggro. Excellent early-game because it's free and summons multiple targets, making it hard for a boss to ignore. |
| Jellyfish Ashes | Early-Mid | Found in Stormhill, given by Roderika before she moves to the Roundtable Hold. High HP, hard to kill, draws aggro. The Jellyfish also debuffs the enemy's defense slightly. |
| Mimic Tear Ashes | Mid-Late | Creates a copy of your character with your loadout at the moment of summoning. Equip your best gear, summon the Mimic, then swap gear back. The Mimic casts your sorceries alongside you — essentially doubling your damage output. Considered the strongest Spirit Ash in the game. Found in Night's Sacred Ground, Nokron. |
| Black Knife Tiche | Late/DLC | Fastest Spirit Ash in the game — almost never gets hit. Deals good damage and applies a damage-over-time debuff. Better than the Mimic Tear for endgame bosses that have fast enough attacks to kill the Mimic before it deals value. Drop from Alecto, Black Knife Ringleader (northwest Liurnia, accessible after Ranni questline). |
Armor and Talismans
Armor
Mages care about two things from armor: staying under light roll threshold (below 25% equip load for the fastest dodge) and equipping any INT-boosting headpieces available. Prioritize staying light over raw defense numbers.
- Azur's Glintstone Crown (+3 INT, +3 Mind, but -5% FP and HP) — worth equipping at very high INT levels when diminishing returns hit; the raw +3 INT still adds meaningful AR
- Raya Lucarian Sorcerer Set — the standard Academy scholar gear; solid defense, light weight
- Blackflame Monk Hood — decent defense, good weight-to-protection ratio; widely available mid-game
- White Reed Set — found in late Altus area; very light, good for maintaining fast roll with upgraded gear
Core Talismans
| Talisman | Effect | Where to find |
|---|---|---|
| Graven-Mass Talisman | +8% sorcery damage — strongest consistent sorcery DPS talisman in the game | Albinauric Rise, north Consecrated Snowfield (requires solving puzzle to unlock tower) |
| Magic Scorpion Charm | +12% magic damage dealt; +10% magic damage taken (not a trade-off if you never get hit) | Volcano Manor questline (Bernahl assassination contracts) |
| Radagon Icon | Shortens spellcast animation — significant quality-of-life and survivability improvement | Found in Debate Parlor, Academy of Raya Lucaria (chest behind illusory wall) |
| Cerulean Amber Medallion +2 | +23 Mind (FP) — more casts per flask | Drops from a miniboss in Altus Plateau (Sainted Hero's Grave) |
Flask and Crystal Tear Setup
Assuming a fully upgraded Flask of Wondrous Physick and all Golden Seeds and Sacred Tears found, aim for roughly 4 HP flasks : 10 FP flasks. Sorcery burns through FP, and you can't attack without it.
For the Flask of Wondrous Physick, the meta combination for burst damage encounters:
- Cerulean Hidden Tear — makes your next 3 seconds of FP consumption completely free. Use immediately before Comet Azur: cast Terra Magica, drink the Flask, fire Comet Azur. The entire beam costs zero FP.
- Magic-Shrouding Cracked Tear — +20% magic damage for 3 minutes. Stack with Terra Magica and Magic Scorpion Charm for the absolute damage ceiling on single-target burst phases.
Combat Pattern — How to Play the Build
Standard Boss Fight Opening
- Enter fog gate — immediately run backward to create space
- Cast Terra Magica — stand in the zone, don't move out of it yet
- Summon your Spirit Ash — wait until the boss commits to attacking the ash before you cast
- Use Rock Sling for consistent, poise-damaging damage while the boss focuses the ash
- When the boss is locked down: drink Cerulean Hidden Tear + fire Comet Azur for massive burst
- Switch back to Rock Sling for sustained DPS; fall back to Glintstone Pebble when low FP
Distance Management
Never let a boss get to melee range without a dodge queued. Your dodge roll is your shield. The Radagon Icon talisman lets you finish casting most spells faster — combining it with the Astrologer's already-fast Glintstone casts means you can slip spells in during short openings. For extremely mobile bosses (Malenia, Black Knife Tiche equivalents), swap Comet Azur for Stars of Ruin — the homing projectiles require no timing to hit.
